Enfant, William Ropp dévorait les ouvrages de son trisaïeul Louis Jacolliot, Le Coureur des jungles, L’Afrique Mystérieuse ou Voyage au pays des singes, livres d’aventures africaines qui allaient semer en lui une irrépressible envie d’Afrique. Devenu photographe, il partit un jour à la découverte du pays Dogon au Mali, puis du Sénégal, enfin de l’Éthiopie où il trouva des gens et une lumière propre à habiter pleinement son art de portraitiste. Uthiopie propose une autre rencontre rare : celle entre deux artistes, deux arts, la photographie et l’écriture, William Ropp et Philippe Claudel, qui offre sa plume aux clichés du premier à travers des poèmes qui sont autant d’échos entre ici et ailleurs. Uthiopie est autant un voyage en pays lointain qu’un voyage intérieur, autant une expédition qu’une rêverie.

As a child, William Ropp devoured books by his great-great-grandfather Louis Jacolliot such as The Jungle Runner, Mysterious Africa and Journey to the Land of the Monkeys – tales of African adventures that filled him with an irrepressible longing for Africa. Having become a photographer, Ropp set out to discover Dogon Country in Mali, then Senegal and finally Ethiopia, where the light and the people allowed him to give full expression to his portrait art. Uthiopia offers another rare encounter, between two art forms and two artists: photography and writing, William Ropp and Philippe Claudel. The latter accompanies Ropp’s pictures with poems that resonate between ‘here’ and ‘elsewhere’. Uthiopia is a journey to a distant land and an inner journey, an expedition and a dream-vision.
